Live Music - Musicians Fascinate UK Youngsters
05/26/2008 - 12:40
Live Music - Musicians Fascinate UK Youngsters It is easy to see why therefore, that during my live gigs lately, I am frequently faced with a young person totally agape watching the live musician at work. They have no doubt become conditioned to accepting music as an impersonally generated medium and find it fascinating to witness the live, hands-on music creativity. Fortunately, this seems to be having an inspirational effect. Having spent most of my career working with theatre orchestras and larger musical combos, I have recently returned to working a lot of solo gigs as a cocktail pianist playing a variety of music styles but often older standards such as Cole Porter, George Gershwin, etc. The thing is, not only am I now finding I’m being booked by the youngster that first saw me a few years ago, but they are requesting that I play the same style of music for their wedding reception or birthday party. It seems that they have got into this sort of music through being made aware of it when I first played for them and they were so intrigued by it. There is very little coverage on UK radio or television of any music style other than the most recent commercial music. The sad thing is that if younger people do not get the opportunity to witness other musical styles because it is not in the mainstream broadcasts and because live music is so rare, we are not giving them the chance to decide if they like it or not. We have therefore been creating a generation for many years that is one-tracked in its musical culture, when we should have been giving our youngsters much more choice. Author Information: Brian Farley has been a worldwide professional Musical Director and pianist since 1974. His duet sheet music website "Easy Duets, Sheet Music for Schools, Musical Instrument Students" provides original musical duets and trios for early level students and some good free "reading musical notation" information.
In the UK for the last 18 years at least, a whole generation has been virtually starved of live musicians for a variety of reasons. The advent of computers being a standard household utility with their accompanying music production and downloadable music format devices, together with widespread video and latterly DVD technology has kept many a youngster indoors for most of their leisure time. Coupled with the rising overheads and prohibitive licence fees and conditions imposed on UK venues such as pubs and restaurants to house live artistes (or even play recorded music), this has had a devastating effect on professional musicians and potential artistes alike. The biggest losers are the members of our younger generations – many of whom have never even heard a live musician or band.
History of Free MP3 Music Download
05/26/2008 - 12:30
History of Free MP3 Music Download
The 1990's were the pioneering days of free mp3s. These were savage days of unbridled downloading, with no laws, regulations, or restrictions – and, music fans loved it. With P2P (peer to peer) music-sharing, it was no longer necessary for fans to purchase an entire album to get one good song. 1999 was the height of the free mp3 music download.
Fans were downloading free music as if it were going out of style, and at the time, they didn't have a clue that's exactly what was about to happen. In 2000, the first major opponent, since P2P had become really popular, appeared.
Superstar metal/hard rock band, Metallica discovered that a demo of theirs "I Disappear" was floating around the internet, before it was officially released. Metallica was tipped off when radio stations accidentally started playing the song, assuming it had already been released. Metallica filed a law suit, and soon after them, so did Dr. Dre.
Rockers, rappers, and record labels complained that they were losing profits. They built their argument around the premise that peer to peer music-sharing not only hurt sales, but violated copyright laws. Advocates of the free mp3 music download intended to keep it that way and claimed they were forced to download mp3s because the artists and record labels were no longer producing quality music that was worthy of being purchased.
After much fighting, the United States Government had to step in to settle the dispute. The Government shut down P2P music sharing and criminalized it with heavy fines and possible jail-time; this was a huge blow to advocates of free music, but, instead of lying down and accepting the sentence, hundreds of underground file-sharing sites sprung up to fight the government and big business, under the premise that the government couldn't catch them all. As a David and Goliath battle ensued, both sides soon realized that neither could definitively "win."
Since there could be no victor, businesses realized they would have to find another way. Offering better quality mp3s at faster download rates was their only option. As increasing numbers of people signed up with pay-music sites, it seemed as if free mp3s were going the way of the dinosaur – especially since most remaining P2P sites were littered with computer viruses, spam, and pornography.
Today, there are plenty of places to download mp3s, but unfortunately, most of these sites require members to either purchase or rent songs. Renting songs usually takes the form of a monthly fee which members pay, allowing them access to an expansive download library. However, if a person cancels their membership, they no longer have access to any of the music they've downloaded, unless they've purchased it.
The existence of the free mp3 music download would look fairly bleak if it weren't for the few legal music sites that uphold the tradition of free mp3s as they were meant to be.

History Of Rock Music

History Of Rock Music
by Rajeev Rampersad
Rock music, where did it all begin? Believe it or not a black man who played black music, originally founded rock music in the mid 50s, this man was Chuck Berry. Rock music became popular almost over night, and was accepted with open arms by the younger generations. This was largely due to younger generations who were excited by the thought of having music that expressed their rebellious streak and their desires to promote anti-conformism.This style of music is a far cry from the modern rock music of today that has evolved over the decades and branched out into a multitude of different genres and sub-genres to create music that is more a way of life than entertainment. However, the still prominent fact that rock music is a form of self- expression and non-conformist desire still remains strong even after all this time.
Rock music grew stronger and stronger with idols such as Elvis Presley, around this time many of the black rock and roll artists left the rock music scene and in their place were a host of other white rockers with a style and look all of their own.
After Elvis Presley's famous entrance, other well known rock idols and bands started popping up from everywhere, but something was lost along the way, rockers started losing sight the whole reason that rock and roll had become popular in the first place, which was non conformist and rebellious attitudes.
During this time rock music, took a huge nosedive with the younger generations, who were uninterested in a mixture of country music, folk songs, and rock music. This was in the late fifties and musicians such as Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers were foremost rockers in the rock music scene.
Just as things were looking bleak, Bob Dylan entered the scene during the Vietnam War and held the heart and attention of many youth of the era with his songs of the Vietnam War and civil rights. Around this time, the Beach Boys changed the rock music scene with their new style of rock music.
California had its own unique spin on rock and roll, which contained very sophisticated and vocal harmonies; this style of rock music was a change from the empathetic shouting that had first been introduced by the black musicians in the mid 50s.
In the early sixties, Britain took on a whole new aspect of rock music and created a rage with bands such as the Rolling Stones and the Animals. During this era, the Yard birds also debuted and although they were in the shadows of the Rolling Stones, they were in fact the beginnings of something great, the musicians from this band were later on to revolutionize rock music all over again.
Nevertheless, it was the birth of the Beatles that created a worldwide mania and the beginning of rock music as a business was really born. Following the Beatles, the second generation of rockers were the Kinks and the Who, the Who had changed rock music forever with their mechanically amplified guitars and songs dedicated to the angry frustrated youth of the 60s
The seventies saw the death of Jimmy Hendrix, and the Doors Jim Morrison, and rock music cooled down. New bands, such as Nirvana and the Eagles, began a more peaceful revival of country music mixed with soft rock. The seventies were characterized by a quieter time in rock music.
The nineties saw the age of electronic music, and this new rage spread all over the world, and saw an era of many different genres of rock music, blended music and dance music mixed together. The 90s were also the decade of heavy metal and bands such as Guns and Roses and Metallica. This style of music split into a myriad of other sub-genres such as the funk-metal of Red-Hot-Chilli-Peppers, Rage Against the Machine and Faith No More.
It is hard to believe that today's rock music began with a single black man, singing a hybrid type of the blues, and flourished over the last five decades to become not only a choice, but also a way of life.
Rock music has evolved to become an array of different styles and sub categories, which provide enjoyment for a multitude of different tastes in music. What the future holds for rock music may not be known, although it is safe to say the rock music will still be around for the next five decades.

Lil Wayne Mp3's

Lil Wayne Mp3's
by Nkeno Kapya
Searching for Lil Wayne Mp3's ? There exist several sites that offer the avid music aficionado free mp3 downloads. You also have at your disposal peer-to-peer (also know as P2P) software such as Kazaa, eMule and WinMx. Yes, you can get free mp3 files from these. All your favourite artists' mp3's (such as Lil Wayne Mp3's) are readily available, but are they safe to use ? Users often complain of viruses and trojans that accompany mp3 downloads from such software. Additionally there are the thousands of lawsuits filed annually targeting individual P2P users by the RIAA mainly due to the fact that copyrighted material is shared . This has lead to a slight decrease, or rather, fear of usage of the aforementioned applications.
Lil Wayne Mp3's are plentiful on the internet. Users can download entire albums of the artist born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.
When downloading Lil Wayne Mp3's, or any other artist's for that matter, it is best to search for the paying services such as Napster, Real Rhapsody, Connect or even iTunes. These offer single mp3 downloads for less than a dollar, and you can then transfer your downloads straight to your portable mp3 player.
In the winter of 2005, Tha Carter II was released and sold close to a quarter of a million copies - debuting at no.2 on Billboard's Top 100 Album chart. It has already been certified platinum.
With the proliferation of mp3 players and broadband internet, the entire collection of Lil Wayne's albums is available in mp3 format. If you're still using dial-up don't despair. You can still download mp3 music, but at a slower rate.
Just recently, Napster announced that its services were free ! Is there a catch somewhere ? Free ? Can you still get Lil Wayne Mp3's without having to pay a dime ?
With the recent 'retirement' of arguably one of hip-hop's best lyricists, Sean Carter (aka Jay-Z), Lil Wayne has self-proclaimed himself "the best rapper alive since the best rapper retired". His music has garnered much critical acclaim ever since Tha Carter, his penultimate offering, was released in 2004. No wonder there's a huge demand for Lil Wayne Mp3's.

Revolutionizing Online Music

Revolutionizing Online Music
Downloading free music has become increasingly more difficult since the demise of Napster, Ares, Kazaa and other downloading websites, which are not only illegal but load your computer with viruses. Apple's popular program iTunes is a legal and easy way to download music, but it costs 99 cents per song. The lack of options leaves many music lovers searching for something better. These and other concerns were on the mind of music lover, engineer and alum of the Forestry School at Syracuse University Andrew Lombardo (brother of Phil Lombardo '05), when he began researching ways to create a downloading website that would benefit not just downloaders, but musicians and advertisers as well. After several years of research and hard work, his final product, Zaziggy.com, is available for public use.
Zaziggy.com is a different kind of music downloading website. With his self-run company, Rockstar Technologies, and his partner Shirley Ma (a patent attorney) Lombardo has created a partnership between advertisers, downloaders and up-and-coming artists. The artists range in genre from acoustic, acoustic rock, country, emo, hip hop, metal, piano, piano acoustic, pop, rap, rock, surf and surf acoustic, to appeal to all sorts of music interests.
To sign up, you simply have to go to Zaziggy.com and fill out a brief survey, whose purpose is to pair your interests up with an advertiser. The survey, which is worlds more fun than the average demographics survey, allows users to get their music for free. Here's how Zaziggy works: while downloading a song a user is paired up with an advertisement for a product based on his or her interests, which are determined based on the survey. This allows companies to target their advertisements to their desired demographic. Additionally, artists receive a royalty each time someone downloads one of their songs and they are able to access the demographics of the people who like their music.
According to the website, "the money made off of the sponsored download is split 50/50 with the artists," who maintain artistic control because Rockstar Technologies does not buy the rights to the songs. Because they make money off of the downloads, this website makes it possible for musicians to benefit from a music downloading website. And the downloads are perfectly legal. The best part is that each week new artists will be added to the website, so users can always anticipate something new. This way, Zaziggy.com provides a way for savvy people to discover new music without having to listen to the radio.
The website, which features clever graphics and just the right amount of humor, is easy and fun to use. Zaziggy.com indicates the top downloads in each genre, and recommends artists that you may like. Different artists are featured at the top of the page, along with a short biography.
If you are interested in music in any way, this website is worth looking into. For more information, check out rockstartechnologies.com/bands/. You can find out more fun facts about Zaziggy.com, as well as enjoy some great animation. Or, if you are an artist or an advertiser who is interested in becoming a part of Zaziggy.com, this link has all the information you need to get involved: rockstartechnologies.com/help. Included on the page are ways to help spread the word about this innovative new website. Lombardo is always looking for more artists and advertisers to become part of the project, as the partnership is beneficial to everyone involved. Zaziggy.com may just be the best thing so far to happen to music-lovers!

Western Rock Music
Western rock music is a popular music form. It features vocals often with vocal harmony and accompanied with instruments- electric guitars, a bass guitar, keyboard instruments- electric piano, organ and synthesizer and drum sets. Other musical instruments like saxophone, trumpet and trombone are also included. Earlier horns were also used which are not being used since the 90s. The central piece of instrument in western rock music is of course the electric guitar. The microphone used by the singers itself functions as a musical instrument. Many singers depend upon the amplification and various effects like echo obtained by electronically transforming the sound obtained through the microphone. The characteristic musical style categorized as rock music and music of its related styles has dominated the musical scene of the west since about 1955. Western rock music has its origins in the Unites States. However, it has been influenced and shaped by a broad field of cultures and musical traditions over the years. Elements of Classical Music
05/26/2008 - 12:08
Elements of Classical Music
For the most part it can be distinguished by the type of instruments in the musical piece. Most modern forms of music only have a couple of instrumentations used in its creation, whereas classical music uses several types of instrumentation. Musicians of this type of music are extremely skilled in their chosen instrument because of the detailed compositions. The instruments used in classical music generally come from five or so different groups of instruments, including string instruments, woodwinds, brass instruments and percussion instruments. The use of these types of instruments generally makes up a symphonic orchestra. When the human voice is added to this ensemble of instrument, and opera is formed.
The forms of classical music are numerous as and tend to be very well defined. The concerto is a musical work in which one solo instrument is accompanied by an orchestra. This form of music was established in the Baroque period and has continued to be a strong musical force today. The symphony is a musical composition and is usually for an orchestra. The opera is an art form in which singer and musicians work together to produce a work that combines text and musical. Another form is known as dance music and its specific use is to facilitate or accompany dancing. This form can either be a whole musical piece or part of a larger musical arrangement. The suite form of music is an ordered set of instrumental or orchestral pieces of music that are performed in a concert setting rather than as accompaniments. An etude is a short musical composition designed to provide practice in a particular technical skill in the performance of a solo instrument. A symphonic poem, also known as a tone poem, is a piece of orchestral music in one movement in which some extra-musical program provides a narrative or illustrative event.
Classical music requires a strong knowledge of music and as well as skill in playing an instrument. Knowledge of music must include the familiarity of development, modulation, variation, musical phrases that are of differing lengths, counterpoint, polyphony as well as sophisticated harmony. The skill involved in playing an instrument requires the musician to be adept at sight reading, have the ability to coordinate with other players in the ensemble as well as experience in playing a composer’s music.
The popularity of classical music has been debated for years. It has been said that it is strictly for upper-class citizens, and at the same time others have said that it is popular with the working class. All in all, the popularity depends on what one considers to be classical music. Certain staples of classical music are often used commercially. Movies and television often use standard clichéd pieces of classical music to convey certain emotions to their audiences. In order for the commercial use of classical music to be effective, it has to rely on the fact that anyone who listens to the music will recognize it and be emotionally drawn to it.
Classical music has many forms that make up the genre, even though no specific form is implied in its description. The knowledge and skill of classical musicians makes these musicians sought after for orchestras or symphonies. The commercial use of certain classical pieces helps to keep the classical music alive and available to all classes of people.

Independent Music Isn't Dead. It's the Only Thing Left.
05/26/2008 - 10:15
If you haven't been reading the trades for the last couple of years, you might be saddened to know that the music industry—at least, the music industry as it has been molded over the last 40 years—is crumbling. The cause of death is a pretty simple one: You and I and everyone we know have been stealing records for almost ten years now, remorselessly and relentlessly. As much as we all hate to listen to Lars Ulrich cry into Bob Rock's silk ascot, it's true. It's illegal, and we've been doing it because we assume that we are justified because our jobs aren't as much fun as emptying Hetfield's dishwasher and flipping mansions for profit. We rationalize our theft by telling ourselves that it's ludicrous that someone should make millions (MILLIONS!) for creating art while we have to roll up our sleeves and wake up for our jobs every day. We're not exactly right about that, though. The reason Lars, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Kelly Clarkson and all of those goobers are justified in making millions off their art is the same reason why LeBron James is worth millions for playing a game: If they weren't making millions off of it, their promoters would be making many more millions off of it while the artists lived on Ramen. In short, if Dave Grohl writes a song that a million people want to hear, that fact by itself doesn't justify a million dollar paycheck. But SOMEONE is going to make a million dollars selling that record. It might as well be Dave. If LeBron James averages 74 points a game for a whole season, that's going to lead directly to someone selling a billion hideous Cavs jerseys. Shouldn't LeBron get a piece of that? Shouldn't LeBron get a BIG piece of that? But obviously, everyone's not satisfied with that explanation. If we were, we wouldn't be burning the hell out of everything we even sort of liked and filesharing all day. The result is that millions and millions of dollars are failing to make their way into the music industry. It's only bad news for a few people. Your favorite millionaire activists will still be able to sell records. Kanye and Tom Morello and Gwen S. aren't going anywhere. As long as there's an Us Weekly, they will still sell records and fill the Staples Center, and that's pretty good news for communists and fourth-graders everywhere. Fountains of
What that's going to do is polarize music in a pretty serious way. On one side, there will be a tiny nucleus of megabosses at the labels. Their stables -once full of hundreds of acts that had good songs but no following or who had been working their way up for years- will be cut down to only the very biggest sellers. That part of the industry will always be there.

The Evolution of Player Pianos
05/26/2008 - 10:00
The Evolution of Player Pianos
Player piano can be defined as one that mechanically plays music using perforations on a paper roll or digital memory on a computer disc. Originated as the Pianola, this player piano was actually a cabinet infront of an ordinary piano. The true player piano was created to lend a complete interactive musical experience in lieu of merely an automatic performance. Geared with interactive control levers, the player piano enables pianists to create music of their own taste. Player pianos grew in popularity with the rise of mass-produced piano in the house and the sheet music industry hype in the late 19th and early 20th century. However, this popularity was short-lived with the introduction of gramophone and wireless in the 1920s. Nevertheless, this classic musical instrument is once again striving to regain its lost glory through the efforts of various enthusiasts.
Player pianos have undergone phases of evolution. The "Barrel piano" or "Roller Piano" was one of the earliest forms of player piano. Powered by a hand crank and controlled by a pinned cylinder, the roller piano resembled a biscuit roller- of the size of a tree trunk! The hammer velocity in a barrel piano is constant, with the cranking speed determining music speed. The “Pianola” was greatly in vogue in the early 19th century.
With changing times, player pianos were manufactured to provide various aids to the human operator. The Split Stack Control player piano is one of the most popular varieties. This instrument enables the operator to lower the volume of either half of the keyboard independently of the other to create musical effects.

Pop Music Pop music is a liberal and vague category of modern music not marked by artistic considerations but by its promising audience or future market. Pop is music composed with calculated objective to influence the majority of its contemporaries. In contrast to music that calls for education or arrangement to appreciate, a significant characteristic of pop music is that anyone is able to enjoy it. Artistic concepts such as complex musical form and aesthetics are not a matter in the writing of pop songs, the key aim being audience satisfaction and commercial triumph. Although the aim of pop music is to sell records and do really well in the charts, it does not require wide acclaim or commercial success. There are bad or unsuccessful pop songs. Originally the term was an abbreviation of, and synonymous to, popular music, but developed around 1954 to express a particular musical category. The stylistic origins of pop music is folk, jazz,R&B,rock and roll, traditional pop music. The typical instruments are electric guitar, bass guitar, drum kit and keyboard. The cultural origins date back to 1950's in the United States. It is popular worldwide since 1960s. The standard format of pop music is the song, usually less than five minutes in length. The instrumentation can range from an orchestra to a lone singer. In spite of this wide choice, a standard lineup in a pop band includes a lead guitarist, a bassist, a drummer (or an electronic drum machine), a keyboardist and one or more singers, generally not themselves instumentalists. Pop songs are generally conspicuous by a heavy rhythmic element, a mainstream style and traditional structure. The most common modification is strophic in form and focuses on memorable melodies, catchy hooks and the appeal of the verse-chorus-verse arrangement, with the chorus sharply contrasting the verse melodically, rhythmically and harmonically. Lyrics in pop compositions are usually simple and speak of universal experiences and feelings, moving away from incomprehensible or debatable issues. The international appeal of pop was evident in the new millennium, with artists from around the world influencing the genre and local variants merging with the mainstream. As of 2008, pop music is now currently the most popular style of music of youth culture, making competition with hip hop, dance and country. Songwriting Concepts

Songwriting Concepts |
|

| What makes a great song? It's a big question, and one that has been written about endlessly in an attempt to unravel the "formula" for creating a world dominating smash hit record. Sure, there are some basic rules and if you were to examine a handful of the most successful or popular songs of the last four decades, they do have certain things in common. Intro, verse, bridge, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus, middle 8, chorus, chorus etc springs to mind! We can examine things like structure, melody and production very easily but for a greater understanding of the "smash", we need to look at concepts. Have you ever wondered why some songs seem to "connect" with people and others don't? When asked why people like a song, they will usually say something along the lines of "I like the tune" or "it's got a great beat". Very rarely will the average music consumer tell you they love a song because of the clever way it's been written, or because the music sounds like it was really hard to play. People simply aren't interested in that stuff. They're interested in the elusive combination of a great melody and a lyric that they can relate to, and preferably sing along to.
Of course this isn't true of all genres of music, for the purposes of this piece I'm referring mainly to pop music, as this is the domain of the hit single! Yes there are lots of brilliant, intelligent musicians and songwriters out there whose music never isn't even near the radio and probably never will be. Whilst the music industry is partly responsible for this, it doesn't change the fact that (generally speaking) if you want to have a big song, you have to be able to connect with lots of people. And that means delivering a message that is clear, simple, catchy and easy to relate to. This means thinking very carefully about what you're song is actually about. It can be so easy to get wrapped up in the details of the music itself, such as which chords to use? How the melody should go? How should the snare drum sound?) Sometimes the central concept of the song can often end up as an afterthought. As a producer and songwriter I get to hear lot of demos from new artists, some of whom are quick to tell me very confidently which of their songs are the singles, or "radio friendly". More often than not, the song they point out is the one they've laboured over the most, or the song with the lyrics about their ex girlfriend / boyfriend. Sometimes this can mean their lyrics that are so personal to them that they're in danger of not meaning anything to anyone else! So it helps a lot if you are able to step back from your work and ask yourself - if I had never heard this song, what would I think about it? Do I know what it's about? More importantly, do I care what it's about? Let's look at a couple of recent example of the smash hit song. Love him or hate him, James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" was undeniably one of the big pop songs of 2005, launching a multi-million selling worldwide career for the artist. Cynics will point out that there was a major label and some powerful marketing behind him, which is also true, but they were marketing something that was already going to be relatively easy to sell, because of the simplicity of the concept, the music and the lyrics. I don't think it's too unreasonable to suggest that without this song, the level of his success wouldn’t been as great, and it certainly wouldn't have happened as quickly. The sentiment behind Blunt's song is extremely simple. Perhaps this is why people connected with it? It's essentially a "grass is greener" song, where the main character is imagining a relationship with a stranger he's just encountered. It's also very memorable, even from a first listen. You may not know all the words to the verses straight away, but the chorus is instant. There is never a moment where you're not sure what the lyrics are because "you can't hear them properly". Now imagine the same music, but with cryptic, clever lyrics that only you understand. Does the song still have the same ability to connect with a large audience? Or just to you? ( This can lead us into a whole other area - who are you writing music for, but that’s another topic in itself! ) Now try it the other way around ; take the lyrics and sing them with a new melody over some complex chords in a clever time signature - is it still a hit? it's very unlikely! In 2007, Rihanna's "Umbrella" had a similar impact on the world of pop. The song is built on an infectious beat and very few chords, and again there is a strong concept behind this song. If you look at the lyrics it's more than just another "I love you baby" type thing, but it also has the a very simple main hook, which hits you the first time you get to what I call the "pay off", the "ella - ella - ella - eh - eh - eh" bit, an infuriatingly catchy modern pop moment! Would the song stand up without this hook / gimmick? Yes I think it would, because the gimmick sounds like an addition to the concept, not the concept itself. In other words "Umbrella" is already strong without it, but as a pop record this hook puts into a whole other league. What I'm getting at here is the importance of considering exactly what it is you're are saying in your songs. It’s not usually enough just to have a great beat or a great riff, try and think of these things are the starting point! It's also important not to confuse "simple" ideas with "dumb" ideas. Writing complicated pop lyrics is relatively easy compared with writing good simple pop lyrics, and great lyricists will write on several levels providing you with deeper meanings if you want to look for them. This is a skill that is harder than it sounds and can take a long time to develop. Early Motown records are a good example of this sort of thing, where the writers provided a catchy "surface" meaning that sounded like great pop music, but underneath there was often another motivation (sometimes with social or political overtones) Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye were among those who dabbled with this sort of writing, and were responsible for creating some staple pop hits that were accessible to everyone, but often had a second "layer" of meaning. So you don't have to "dumb down" you're masterpiece to get your message across, just try disguising it a bit, you'll be adding depth to your work and you'll be in good company! Of course the most important part in focusing on the concept of your song is having a concept to begin with. What do people want to hear about? Themes of love and loss are the most popular, anecdotes about feeding your cat will not grab people's attention the same way. If you spend a bit of time considering what you're actually saying, and how people will interpret your "message", you should be able give your work a better chance of connecting with your audience. Instead of spending three hours on the snare drum, spend three hours on making your central idea something people can relate to, as generally people don't listen to songs because of how the drums sound! And you never know, you may even be giving yourself a greater chance at that world dominating chart-topping success in the process..... Fraser Smith is a record producer, mixer, songwriter and musician. He spends a lot of time developing new artists in the studio, helping to evolve their sound and focus their songwriting skills. He has been in the music business for over 10 years including several years writing, touring and recording as a member of top 40 band Shed Seven. He has produced records for Little Man Tate, Dog Almighty, Winterkids, Hayley Hutchinson, Shed Seven, Pinstripe, The Crane Brothers and many more... Discover a part of London's rich culture with a theatre break |
|
| For centuries London has been home to great shows held in beautiful theatres and taking in a production is something that all visitors to the city should undertake. Located in London’s bustling West End, the 'London Palladium' has been home to a variety of different shows since it opened in 1910 and is currently the home to one of the most popular shows of this season - Andrew Lloyd Webber’s dazzling new production of “The Sound of Music”. A family favourite for decades, this musical treat is the ideal way to introduce you to London’s rich theatrical history, particularly in the plush surroundings of the Palladium.
The Adelphi Theatre is another fine venue to take in a show. Dating back to the start of the 19th century, this theatre, situated on London’s famous Strand, is currently playing host to another world famous show, 'Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'. A brand new production of the famous Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical, 'Joseph' is currently delighting London theatre goers and critics across the city. Of course, not every show you see in London has to be in the format of traditional musicals. One of the largest and grandest productions currently treading the boards is “Mamma Mia”, an enchanting story of love and friendship set to the timeless songs of Abba. Currently staging more productions across the world than any other musical, this is a show any visitor to London should take the time to see. In a similar vein, “We Will Rock You”, a futuristic tale narrated through the classic songs of Queen, is currently taking the Dominion Theatre in the West End by storm, with a stellar cast directed Christopher Renshaw, whose impressive credentials include “The King & I” at the Palladium and, more recently, the hugely popular “Taboo”. While musicals may not be every London visitor’s cup of tea, a good, classic “whodunit” is sure to appease most theatre goers, and you can’t get any more 'classic' than Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap”. One of the world’s finest thrillers, this play has been running in the West End since 1952, beginning its run at the Ambassadors Theatre before moving to its current home in St. Martin’s in 1974. This excellent play has been running longer than any other production in the world and recently celebrated its 20,000th performance. Visiting the theatre is only half the fun of a trip to the West End, with many hotels in London offering excellent package deals to coincide with your visit, including discounts on theatre tickets, pre-show meals and complimentary drinks after the event. For a subtle mix of culture, history and entertainment, a theatre break in London really can’t be beat.

Hip Hop is Not Dead, but 50 Cent Can't Save It

Hip Hop is Not Dead, but 50 Cent Can't Save It |
|
||
| Hip-hop is not dead, there is still a pulse, but it is dying. No matter how much we try to fight it, the fact of the matter is that the quality of Rap has fallen so much that we can’t even hear a rap song on the radio unless it is about sex, drugs, violence, money and hatred towards other rappers. What once was a fun loving and politically conscious style of expression, producing radio-friendly and revolutionary tracks such as “Parents just don’t understand” (Will Smith) and “Fight the Power” (Public Enemy), respectively, has become a filth-driven, obscenity laced pile of garbage that has almost no originality. Today’s rap music has given us songs that are so cruelly unoriginal and immoral that Hip-Hop has come under fire by its biggest mogul, Russell Simmons, who believes it is time to clean the mess up.
The words 'bitch' and 'ho' are utterly derogatory and disrespectful of the painful, hurtful, misogyny that, in particular, African-American women have experienced in the United States as part of the history of oppression, inequality, and suffering of women. The word 'nigger' is a racially derogatory term that disrespects the pain, suffering, history of racial oppression, and multiple forms of racism against African-Americans and other people of colour. (Simmons) For all too long rappers have been talking about how much money they have, how many “bitches” they’ve slept with, how many “hoes” they’ve pimped, and how many people they’ve killed or are going to kill. As a fan of rap music, I am tired of hearing the same old story, just versed differently by different people. The rapper that embodies this disgusting same old story the most is Jamaica, New York’s own 50 Cent. Everybody knows Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, be it through his controversial lyrics, his ongoing feuds with other rappers, his mainstream popularity, or the fact that he has gotten shot nine times during the span of his lifetime. Let me just make on thing clear, being shot 9 times doesn’t make you any more worthy of being a rapper then a guy who sells drugs. You are responsible to put out good music, and to be a role model to those who look up to you. Man, bitches come and go, every nigga pimpin know You saying it's secret, but you ain't gotta keep it on the low Bitch choose with me, I'll have you stripping in the street Put my other hoes down, you get your ass beat Now Nik my bottom bitch, she always come up with my bread The last nigga she was with put stitches in her head (Jackson “P.I.M.P”) In the song “P.I.M.P” 50 Cent raps about how he treats his women who work for him. He is talking about how these “bitches,” go from pimp to pimp, and it is not he who is putting them to work, it is the fact that “he gets chose.” Women decide that they want to be pimped by 50 Cent, and he gets them to “strip in the street.” I do not know why anyone would want to work under these conditions. According to 50 cent, if you are a good earner, and you bring the other “hoes” down, you get beat up, and you are obviously unsafe in this working environment. Take his “bottom bitch” Nik, for example. She may always come up with his money on time, but in doing so she had to receive stitches in her head. I wonder what kind of benefits come to being pimped by 50 Cent. What is wrong with our society that the title of “Pimp,” which is the scum of the earth, is portrayed as something that is good, something that is glorified? Why does 50 Cent have to refer to women as “bitches” and “hoes?” Why can’t a rap song about loving and not exploiting women be a hit? Believe it or not 50 Cent is a role model. Millions of kids look up to him, citing his rags to riches story as inspiration, but not every person who came up the way 50 Cent did glorifies the life of a drug-dealer. Suburban kids who don’t come from the ghetto refer to women as “hoes” and talk about “pimping.” Am I the only one who finds this disgusting? The fact of the matter is that these kids who are from the suburbs (and those who aren’t for that matter) are going to have to work with women in the real world. In a professional environment, if you call a woman a “bitch” you will be slapped with a fat lawsuit. That is exactly what happened to Isiah Thomas of the New York Knicks, when in 2006, he was sued by Anucha Browne Sanders and cost the Knicks $11.6 million dollars, after calling her a “bitch.” That is exactly what could happen if you refer to a woman as a “bitch.” Last year when Don Imus came out and called a college basketball team a group of “Nappy Headed Hoes,” had everybody in the nation stand up and take notice. Houston (white) rapper Paul Wall was quoted as saying: The fact that he referred to some people that he don’t even know, a respectable basketball team, as ho’s, was bad. . . and I don’t think a basketball team are some ho’s, so he shouldn’t of called them some ho’s. (Slayton) We were all offended when a so-called “Shock Jock” said something that was offensive to not only the African-American community, but also women in general. I’m not condoning what Imus said, it was despicable and wrong, but why is it okay for 50 Cent to say something like “Hoe make a pimp rich, I ain't paying bitch” on one of his hit songs? Sadly “gangsta shit” is what our country wants to see and hear about, and apparently you can’t get your video played on T.V. unless you portray a certain image. Rapper Trae cites this in his song “No Help.” “I thought it was coming, a twenty thousand dollar video. BET denied it, cause unlike...it wasn't about the hoes:” (Thompson, “No Help”). Trae is referring to the video his song “Swang,” which was a tribute to his fallen friends Fat Pat and DJ Screw. Why can’t songs like this be played? They cannot be played simply because there are no half-naked women in the videos. 50 Cent does not just rap about “pimping hoes,” he also raps about killing people. 50 Cent’s credibility is based on the fact that he got shot 9 times. When 50 Cent’s record Get rich or Die Tryin’ first came out, you could ask about how good the music is, and the answer you would get is “He was shot 9 times!!!” I may not be a talent scout, but the fact that you got shot does not make you a good rapper any more than being tall makes you a good basketball player. 50 Cent finds ways to cause violence even when his music is not being played. One example of this is his biopic Get Rich or Die Tryin’. The movie depicts 50 Cent as Marcus, a drug dealer turned rap artist. Critics panned the movie for its overly-dramatic anger and flawed script. After a showing of the movie in Pittsburgh PA, a 30 year old man named Sheldon Flowers was shot 3 times and killed, inside of the theatre. 50 makes numerous gun references in many of his songs, but in another one of his hit singles, “I’ll Still Kill,” he raps violently about shooting people. So If a nigga get outta line, a nigga get clapped I got an arsenal of infiltry, Im built for this mentally Thats why Im the general, I do what they pretend to do Front on me now nigga I will be the end of you Forget ya enemies and think of what your friends'll do I drop a bag off, then let a mag off The Hecklar Koch should tear half of your ass off (Jackson, “Still Kill”) 50 Cent proves here exactly why he is not someone kids should be looking up to. According to 50, if someone gets out of line, they get murdered, but he then claims that “he is built for this mentally.” He obviously is not built for anything mentally if he feels he has to kill someone who says something he disagrees with. “I’ll Still Kill” is the same story 50 Cent has been telling since the beginning of time: “If you front on him, you will get killed.” When the Virginia Tech shootings happened, nobody was praising Seung-Hui Cho, the man who killed all of those innocent people, and then himself. Nobody looks at O.J. Simpson as a hero, and rapper Snoop Dogg frowns when he is confronted with the murder of gang member Phillip Woldemariam (which was ruled to be self-defense, but nonetheless a man lost his life). So why is it that 50 Cent is cool for rapping about guns and killing people? He is not doing anything new, he is not saying anything different then what rappers N.W.A said 20 years ago. 50 Cent has to be a liar, because if any of this stuff he is rapping about is true, he should be in Prison. What is there to say about a society who only buys records about killing people, sex and drugs. It is saying that a society who buys these records also condones the killing of people, selling of drugs, and the “pimping of hoes.” 50 Cent is also very versatile, and obviously knows how to manage his time. Besides killing people and “pimpin’ hoes,” 50 finds the time to peddle dope. As every other rapper claims to have been growing up, 50 Cent was a drug-dealer. In his song “I Get Money,” 50 Cent not only raps about every rapper’s favorite pastime “Bling” but he also does briefly go into how he attained his fortune: Have A Baby By Me Baby, Be a Millionaire, I Write The Check Before The Baby Comes, Who The Fuck Cares? I'm Stanky Rich, Ima Die Tryna Spend This Shit, Southsides Up In This Bitch, Yeah I Smelled Like The Vault, I Use To Sell Dope, I Did Play The Block, Now I Play On Boats. . . (Jackson, “I Get Money”) I love how this song is titled “I Get Money,” but he rarely goes into exactly how he “gets money.” 50 claims to have sold dope in his past, but how much can you possibly believe this, when every rapper and their grandmother claims to have sold dope. Even so, a drug-dealer, like a pimp, is not someone who kids should be looking up to. When kids in the ghetto listen to a 50 Cent record, they think these are the only ways to make it out of the ghetto, because as I’ve said before, 50 Cent is a role model (a bad one, but nonetheless a role model). If 50 Cent was a good emcee, he would have grown up by now because in the world of music, artists are supposed to show growth and maturity with each album they release. 50 Cent continues to rap about the same old things: Hoes, Guns, and Crack. Is it really 50 Cent’s fault though that he is such an icon? I mean, we are the people who are making him such a superstar, we are the people who made him such an icon. I hope that I am not the only one who is disappointed in a society whose favorite son is a criminal. Not to single out 50 Cent, but the whole genre needs a change. For every Chamillionare (rappers who speak out against drug use, and use no profanity in their records) there are 25 50 Cents. The genre needs to change, or else we are looking at a future that is as bleak and dim as a 50 Cent record. WORKS CITED: Jackson, Curtis. "P.I.M.P." Liner Notes. Get Rich or Die Tryin'. "A 'Brand New' Maturity"

"A 'Brand New' Maturity" |
|
| John Ballantyne A “Brand New” Maturity
Some bands get popular as they get older, but their most diehard fansaren’t always happy. They claim the band has sold out to the corporate machine and aren’t writing songs about what they care about. The band “Brand New” has gotten older and more popular, however selling out is exactly what they have not done; “brand new” has simply matured as they have aged and been through more in their life. “Brand new” is a band that formed in 2000 and consisted of members all from Long Island. Lead singer Jesse Lacey, of Levittown has written most of the songs for the band. In 2001, Brand New was an immature, innocent pop-punk band that made songs in which they fantasized about supermodels. However, by 2006 Brand New has become a mature group of young men, writing songs that deal with more serious social issues, such as drunk driving. Through Jesse’s lyrics you can see how he, as well as the rest of the band has matured so much from their first album release in 2001, to their most recent album in 2006. Brand New’s first album was release in 2001 and titled, Your Favorite Weapon. This album was your typical pop-punk album filled with catchy lyrics about girls, partying and drinking, friends, and enemies. The song “Magazines” shows the childishness of Brand New at the time, in which Jesse continuously talks about how he is in love with a supermodel he only, sees on TV: “Laetitia, you destroy me, so I can't see why I feel so lonely when you and I could be forever perfectly perfect together. I know. Broken down in my dead bedroom, stuttering to pictures of you. I know that you can always see me. I saw you staring through my TV last night.” The girl Laetitia he is talking about is supermodel Laetitia Casta who he falls in love with because he sees her on TV and in, as the song is titled, magazines. Laeticia “destroys” him because he is infatuated with her and realizes he will never be able to be with her. He becomes lonely at this thought and dreams that they can be “perfectly perfect together”. He is upset at the fact he will never be with Laeticia (“broken down in my dead bedroom”) and is speechless at how beautiful she is while staring obsessed at pictures of her (“stuttering to pictures of you”). He also dreams that while he is watching her on television and magazines that she can also see him when he says, “I know that you can always see me, I saw you staring through my T.V. last night”. Jesse Lacey feel as if her and the girl connect when he sees her image, whether in magazines or on T.V. This infatuation he has with a supermodel he has never met, as well as pleasuring himself to images of this girl, gives Your Favorite Weapon the immature pop-punk edge that they were labeled with in 2001. Still nervous and fantasizing about the supermodel he so desperately desires, he goes on to say, “Laetitia, you got my hand shaking, I’m begging you oh baby please stop breaking my heart because I got the feeling that you and I will never really get it on.” Jesse’s hand is not shaking because he is having a seizure or nervous, but because he knows that him and Laetitia will never “get it on” and therefore will pleasure himself while looking at images of her with his “hand shaking”. It is immature to have obsession with a super model especially when they seem to contain some sort of emotional attachment. The song “Magazines” is just one of many songs on this album that shows that Brand New was just a bunch of kids making music that weren’t really deep, but they enjoyed playing. Considering the members of Brand New were in their late teens and early twenties when they created Your Favorite Weapon, their music was childish. However, by 2006 Brand New had grown into adults and released their most recent album, The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me. It is rumored that the whole album is about the tragic death of Katie Flynn, the flower girl in a wedding. After the reception, Flynn was being driven to a hotel. Their limousine was struck by a drunk driver heading in the wrong direction on the Meadowbrook parkway, and the seven year old Katie, was killed. While it is unknown whether they knew Flynn personally, the story was a tragic and popular story in their hometown on Long Island. While it is disputed as to whether the whole album is about this tragedy, the song cleverly titled, “Limousine” is undoubtedly about the accident: "K, here's your ride. Get your petals out and lay them in the aisle Pretend you are God, and grow, And that it's your own day to wed We've found your man. He's drinking up. He's all-American, and he'll drive. He's volunteered with grace to end your life.” This lyric from the song refers to the limousine they take to the wedding (“K, here’s your ride) and introduces Katie, who was the flower girl in the wedding (“Get your petals out and lay them in the aisle”). Then goes on to introduce the killer (“We’ve found your man”) and explain that he is drunk and has made the choice to drink and drive and thus the choice to end Katie’s life (“He’s drinking up…..and he’ll drive. He’s volunteered with grace to end your life”). Toward the end of the song he counts how many times he repeats the last line and ends Brand New throughout the album, but especially this song take a very serious approach to drunk driving and prove through their lyrics how devastating it is. Showing “Magazines” from Brand New’s first album, “Your Favorite Weapon”, and “Limousine” from their most recent album, “The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me” prove how much Brand New has certainly matured as a band. These two tracks prove that Brand New has absolutely matured as a band over the past five years. The band started young, writing about falling in love with images of a supermodel and pleasuring oneself to them. Upon reaching adulthood, the band matured and their music followed suit. They took on much more serious topics, such as how big of a problem drunk driving is, as well as citing a tragedy from their hometown as an example of the problem. Brand New has grown as a band rapidly over the past five years and will continue to mature even more with each album because they will become wiser and more aware of society over time. In several songs that the band has made, they take a very strong stance against drunk driving and I expect them to become stronger advocates against drinking and driving in the future. While the type of music they play may change slightly, the substance and meaning will still exist. Bibliogrphy Brand New, and Jesse Lacey. "Magazines." Your Favorite Weapon. Razor & Tie, 2001. Kelly Clarkson Admits She's Never Been In Love It might seem super hard to believe it, but pretty pop princess Kelly Clarkson has admitted that she's never been in love. The 25 year-old Idol winner spills all in this month's issue of Elle Magazine in the US, where she is featured on the cover. She said "I know people probably think I've been heartbroken, because of the stuff I've sung and written. I love my friends and family. But I have never said the words 'I love you' to anyone in a romantic relationship. Ever. I am very old-school, conservative in my thinking when it comes to relationships. Love is something you work at. It doesn't come easily. There are going to be bad days. You are going to have to work at loving someone when they are being an idiot. People think they're just going to meet the perfect guy. Don't be ridiculous." Poor old Kelly has been going through a rough time recently. There's been a run in with Clive Davis over her upcoming CD, “My December", where he allegedly made an offer of $10 million if Kelly ditched five of her songs for more radio-friendly. In the meantime, expect to see Kelly in a city near you as she travels across the US this summer as part of her tour. Rihanna And Her Celebrity Legs Of A Goddess Pop starlet Rihanna certainly seems to be one of the most favourite stars in the UK at the moment. Not only did she soar to number 1 on the UK singles charts based on downloads alone, but she's kept the top sport for 4 consecutive weeks. And this weekend the Barbados-born 19-year-old's third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, entered the UK Album Chart straight in at number one! My Chemical Romance Release Teenagers Video And Kick Off Tour Teenagers, we've all been one, or still are one, and apparently they scare the living day out of My Chemical Romance. Watch how a group of teenage kids tear apart the band in a mash up of music and chaos in their latest single and video for, you guessed it, "Teenagers.". UB40 Sue Paris Hilton As Jail Time Looms UB40 is suing Paris Hilton's record label for £250,000 in the High Court in London, claiming breach of copyright over her hit single "Stars Are Blind". Paris, who was at the MTV Movie awards on Sunday, recorded the song last year and it reached a respectable number eighteen on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. However, according to UB40, the song is a copy of a substantial part of Kingston Town, written in 1989 by Kendrick Patrick. Paris is already due to report to prison in California on Tuesday for violating for violating her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case - let's hope this latest legal challenge doesn't land her in even more hot water. Do you think the starlet copied the UB40 track? Liberty X Announce Split In news that will shock many fans, British pop group Liberty X have announced that they will not be recording any further songs together. In a statement on the Official Liberty X Website they said: "We want to let the fans know that Liberty X won't be doing any more recording together. All of us have separate projects we're working on, and are excited about. "We're still the best of friends and we'll still be doing all the dates on the current club tour. Also, we still intend to come together sometimes as Liberty X for one-off special events". The group were formed in 2001 on the UK TV Show Popstars, originally calling themselves Liberty but later changing to Liberty X following a clash with another group of the same name. As well as many hit singles (including a UK number one for "Just a Little" in 2002) the band released 3 albums: Thinking It Over, Being Somebody and X.
